Step #6: Build Your Community

Welcome back Thriving Artist!

I am glad you have come along the path with me to create your declaration of independence as an artist.

Together we have covered 5 steps:
Step #1: your vision and mindset
Step #2: inform and educate yourself
Step #3: take action
Step #4: be persistent
Step #5: create your own opportunities

Now, we are at the last step…

Step #6: Build Your Community

While my Dad was independent he was not a loner. No matter where he went he made friends and created community. He knew how to relate to people, put them at ease, and make them smile.

For instance, after a patient finished their optometry exam with him he’d be sure to play “I Can See Clearly Now” on a 45rpm record player. This certainly made him memorable by his patients. 😉

Being an artist by its nature is a solitary endeavor and building community is vital to gain wider and relevant exposure:
→ You can learn from and grow with other professionals
→ Extends your reach beyond just yourself
→ Develop a more meaningful connection with your customers
→ You can celebrate shared aspirations and wins together
→ It is the lifeblood of your business sustainability and growth

How do you build community exactly?

Start with understanding your mission or message you have with your art. This will be the core of how you relate to your audience and convert them from stranger to customer to community.

Identifying how you will relate to your audience is the beginning of your brand. Here’s how it fits together:

1. Branding — Meaning/Feeling
Your relatable essence to connect with your customers

2. Marketing — Community
Create experiences through shared aspirations, ideals, beliefs

3. Sales — Trust
Transactions occur after the relationship is established (1 + 2 = 3)

Branding sets the stage for humanizing your business, enables an ongoing conversation, and leads to trusted relationships.

Branding is often misunderstood and completely overlooked by artists.

Thriving Artist, I don’t want you to make this common strategic error and waste your resources, time, and money.

With my 25+ years as a professional designer and marketer, I am a HUGE proponent of branding yourself as an artist. It is crucial to truly stand out in the increasingly crowded art marketplace and your brand is key to your success.
